Kitchen / Specification № 01
A specification-first walk-through: the layouts that work, the materials that survive the coast, and the honest 2026 cost for a Trivandrum home.

A modular kitchen is not a look. It is a system: factory-cut cabinet modules of standard sizes, sealed carcass material sized for humidity, and hardware rated for the open-close cycles a working Kerala kitchen puts through it.
Get those three right and the kitchen lasts twenty years. Get them wrong, as most Trivandrum kitchens do, and the shutters swell in the first monsoon, the drawer channels fail in year three, and you rebuild twice inside a decade.
This guide is the specification-first version, layouts, materials and the real 2026 numbers for a 2,000-2,500 sq ft Trivandrum home.
A modular kitchen is built from cabinet modules of pre-decided widths, 300, 450, 600 and 900 mm, carcassed off-site and screwed to the wall in a single day of installation. Countertop, shutters, hardware and appliances then drop onto a fixed reference grid.
The alternative, the traditional Kerala carpenter kitchen, site-built in teak or jackwood, is often beautiful. But it is rarely repairable in modules: when one shutter warps, the whole unit gets replaced. And at 2026 timber prices it runs 1.5-2× a well-specified modular kitchen.
Kerala’s climate adds two constraints Delhi and Bangalore never have to solve. These two are not taste decisions:
Everything else, layout, shutter finish, appliance mix, is budget and taste. Carcass grade and hardware plating are not.
A layout is fixed by two things: the plumbing wall (sink, dishwasher) and the hob position (LPG line, chimney duct). Once those are set, only four plans are practical for a Kerala home of this size. Tap through the measured drawings.
The default for a 2,000-2,200 sq ft home. A natural working triangle between fridge, sink and hob, with the floor centre free for a breakfast island or open access to a utility room behind.
The shutter is what you see. The carcass is what fails. A high-gloss acrylic door on MR-grade ply looks premium on day one, and swells inside three monsoons.
On why the invisible box matters more than the finish
Selected Trivandrum kitchens

The carcass is invisible and takes 100% of the humidity and water load. Only two materials belong in a Kerala kitchen.
IS 710 · Boiling Water Proof
The standard spec, 19 mm for base cabinets, 12 mm for shelves. Verify the ISI mark on the sheet edge; unmarked “710” ply is a common Kerala counterfeit.
Denser · +20-30% cost
High-Density, High-Moisture-Resistant. Dimensionally more stable than ply, the right call for base cabinets under the sink and dishwasher where standing water is periodic.
The single biggest cost driver in the whole kitchen. Six finishes are commonly quoted; here is what each actually costs and lasts on the coast.
| Finish | 2026 rate ₹/sqft, shutter only |
Life in Kerala |
Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laminate on BWP ply | from 850 | 10-15 yr | Standard family kitchen, working budget |
| Membrane / PVC-wrapped | from 1,100 | 7-10 yr | Colour-varied kitchens; avoid near the hob |
| Acrylic (high-gloss) | from 1,600 | 12-15 yr | Contemporary look; scratches show, wipe daily |
| PU paint on MDF core | from 2,000 | 15-20 yr | Matte premium; repairable in place |
| Veneer + PU sealer | from 1,900 | 15+ yr | Warm wood-grain; needs annual polish |
| Lacquered glass | from 2,400 | 20+ yr | Ultra-premium; heavy, specialised hinges |
Takes the daily load. Four choices, in ascending value-for-money for a Kerala kitchen:
Marble fails in a working Kerala kitchen, turmeric, tamarind and lemon all stain and etch it. We spec quartz with a marble-look pattern instead.
Hinges, channels, tandem boxes and lift-ups are 8-14% of the cost and 100% of the ten-year longevity. Three brands are worth specifying, Hettich, Blum, Hafele, all cycle-tested (80,000 cycles standard, 200,000 premium) with working service in Trivandrum. Pick one and standardise the whole kitchen on it for one warranty.
Everything scales off the running sqft of cabinetry, not floor area. An L-shape (10×8) is ~65 running sqft; a U-shape (12×10) is ~95. Three tiers cover the market.
↑ Kitchen only. Appliances are always separate line items:
Total appliance bill: from ₹60,000, never buried inside the modular price.
A free measure and a five-line quotation for your Trivandrum kitchen, every rupee attributable.
A gloss acrylic face on MR-grade ply looks premium on Day 1 and fails inside three monsoons. Ask what’s behind the door.
Under-cabinet LED adds from ₹6,000 and doubles the usable working area at night. Skipping it is a false economy.
A 60-cabinet kitchen has 60-90 hinges, the saving is ₹9,000; the replacement labour eighteen months later is ₹35,000.
Long-simmer curries and heavy tempering need real suction. 90 cm at 1,200 m³/hr is a sensible minimum; below 1,000 leaves oil on the ceiling within a year.
A dedicated 3×2 ft washing counter beside the sink pays for itself in the first year in reduced splash damage to the main top.
